4.1.5.4 — Loads for Occupancy Served

(1) The following shall be designed to carry not less than the specified load required for the occupancy they serve, provided they cannot be used by an assembly of people as a viewing area:

(a) corridors, lobbies and aisles not more than 1 200 mm wide,

(b) all corridors above the first storey of residential areas of apartments, hotels and motels, and

first storey

means the storey that has its floor closest to grade and its ceiling more than 1.8 m above grade.

hotel

means floor areas, a floor area or part of a floor area that contains four or more suites and that provides sleeping accommodation for the travelling public or for recreational purposes.

mezzanine

means an intermediate floor assembly between the floor and ceiling of any room or storey and includes an interior balcony.

occupancy

means the use or intended use of a building or part of a building for the shelter or support of persons, animals or property.

storey

means , except for the purposes of Part 7 of Division B, the portion of a building, (a)that is situated between the top of any floor and the top of the floor next above it, or (b)that is situated between the top of the floor and the ceiling above the floor, if there is no floor above it.
